Yesterday Mr Awny's Year 11 Ancient History class stepped back in time to experience the flavours of Ancient Carthage. Following a cooking demonstration of an authentic recipe recorded by Cato the Elder, students sampled Puls Punica—a traditional porridge made with ricotta and honey. Congratulations to seven Year 11 students who have been selected for the Step Up Into Teaching Program at Australian Catholic University (ACU). This is a fantastic achievement and recognises their passion and commitment to pursuing a career in teaching. Pictured: Harry, Chloe, Kayley, Taylor and Natalia Absent: Scarlett and Irisa The students will commence their university studies at ACU Strathfield on 8 July, experiencing life as university students while completing two first-year education units. Upon successful completion, they will be well placed to continue their Primary or Secondary Teaching degree at ACU in 2028. Faith Moves Mountains. ⛰️🙏 Our Year 8 students recently took part in a meaningful Spirituality Day, exploring how faith can guide them through life's challenges and strengthen their trust in God's presence. Through prayer, reflection, discussion and collaborative activities, students discovered what it means to put faith into action in their everyday lives. The day complemented their Encountering Jesus learning, encouraging them to consider how the teachings of Jesus can shape their choices, relationships and responses to the world around them. 🎭✨ This week, the cast and crew from our school production of Matilda Jr., along with our elective Dance and Drama students, had the exciting opportunity to attend the professional production of Anastasia at the Lyric Theatre. Students were captivated by the breathtaking sets, stunning costumes, and the exceptional standard of singing, acting, and dance. Having recently completed three sold-out performances of Matilda Jr., they were able to truly appreciate the skill, dedication, and teamwork that go into bringing a production of this scale to life. Experiences like these not only inspire our young performers but also deepen their understanding and appreciation of the performing arts. We were especially proud to receive compliments from members of the public on the outstanding behaviour and professionalism of our students throughout the performance. They represented Santa Sophia with respect and pride, both inside and outside the theatre. 🏅🎓 On Monday, we celebrated the achievements, dedication, and excellence of our students at our School of Challenge Awards Ceremony. A special congratulations to Santa Sophia alumna Makiah Arora, who was recognised as the College Dux for 2025, achieving the highest ATAR in her Year 12 cohort. We are incredibly proud of Makiah's outstanding accomplishment and the example she continues to set for our students. Throughout the ceremony, we also recognised recipients of the School of Challenge Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum Awards. A special mention goes to Year 9 student Caleb, who achieved the Platinum Award – a remarkable accomplishment and a first for a Year 9 student. Students were also acknowledged for their academic excellence through the presentation of Academic Awards, along with several special awards, including: ⭐ VET Finalist for Student of the Year – Andre C ⭐ Robin Preston MP Encouragement Award 2025 – Bronte P Congratulations were also extended to our students who achieved their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards, recognising their commitment, perseverance, and service. Our Year 7 students recently participated in their Spirituality Day, centred on the theme of Faith and inspired by the Parable of the Mustard Seed. Throughout the day, students engaged in meaningful activities, reflection, and discussion, exploring how even the smallest acts of faith can grow into something truly extraordinary. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their relationship with God, strengthen connections with one another, and reflect on their role within our faith community. A special thank you to our Leader of Mission and Formation, Rachel Vecchio-Ruggeri, whose dedication, creativity, and passion continue to provide students with enriching faith experiences that inspire growth and reflection. We also extend our gratitude to Eleanor and Hannah from Catholic Youth Parramatta for their support in training our Year 10 peer ministry leaders and for facilitating such an engaging and faith-filled experience for our Year 7 students. Days like these remind us that Catholic education is about so much more than academic achievement.
