NAPLAN: What Parents Really Need to Know

Each March, families across Australia hear a lot about NAPLAN. The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. But what does it really mean for your child in 2026?

This week it was Year 3 Navy and Gold’s turn to celebrate Family Mass with Father Carlos. Family Mass is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our community and celebrate the beautiful partnership between home and school, recognising parents as the first educators of their children in faith. By participating side-by-side, our families showed what faith in action truly looks like. Students and their parents played an active role in the liturgy, from the prayerful delivery of the First Reading and Responsorial Psalm to the presentation of the Offertory gifts. We are so grateful to all the Year 3 Navy and Gold parents and family members who joined us for this special celebration. 🙏💙💛 #FamilyMass #Year3 #SchoolofCuriosity

Our Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts students recently visited the Art Gallery of NSW for an inspiring day of learning and creative exploration. Students viewed the ARTEXPRESS exhibition, showcasing outstanding Bodies of Work from the 2025 HSC, and explored other exhibitions throughout the gallery. They also attended the Students Speak Seminar, where a panel of top HSC Visual Arts students from across NSW shared insights into the development of their Bodies of Work. Hearing directly from these emerging artists gave our students valuable perspectives on the creative process, experimentation, and the dedication required to bring a major work to life. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to engage with the broader artistic community and gain inspiration for their own artistic journeys. #ARTEXPRESS2026 #ARTEXPRESS Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Our first Careers Breakfast for 2026 was held on Wednesday 25 February, welcoming students from Years 9–12 for an inspiring morning of career exploration. We were privileged to hear from Mr Benson and Mr Ruocco, parents from our School of Curiosity community, who generously shared their professional journeys. Mr Benson spoke about his diverse career pathway — beginning as a barista and chef, going on to own a successful vegan café while playing semi-professional rugby league, and later transitioning into a career in banking to support family life. Mr Ruocco, a Cyber Security Leader, gave students insight into the dynamic world of cyber security, outlining key stages of his role: detect, respond, triage, contain and recover. We are sincerely grateful to Mr Benson and Mr Ruocco for investing their time and experience to help our students explore future possibilities. #CareersEducation #FuturePathways #SchoolCommunity

On Friday 13th February the Santa Sophia community gathered as one for our 2026 Whole College Mass and the Commissioning of our Student Leaders. Inspired by the Gospel, we reflected on what it means to be "open" to an encounter with Christ in our daily lives. Congratulations to our newly commissioned leaders from Curiosity, Connect, and Challenge. As they received their badges, they committed to a journey of servant leadership, promising to model Wisdom through Faith, Hope, and Love in all they do. We look forward to a year of growing together in grace. Don’t forget—our Friday Masses have recommenced and we look forward to celebrating Mass with students, staff and parents each Friday from 7:45 am in the chapel ⛪️ #SantaSophia #HolyWisdom #StudentLeadership #FaithHopeLove Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

🌏💜 CSPD Project Compassion Launch 2026 💜🌏 This year, over 80 schools from across Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese gathered at St John XXIII Catholic College, Stanhope Gardens, for the official launch of Project Compassion. It was a powerful coming together of students and staff, united in faith, solidarity, and action, as we begin our Lenten journey. During the launch, we deepened our understanding of the work of Caritas Australia – who they are, how they serve vulnerable communities around the world, and the impact of the Project Compassion Lenten Appeal. We were reminded that through education, clean water initiatives, sustainable agriculture, and emergency relief, Caritas partners with communities to create long-term change. A special invitation was extended to all CSPD schools to take part in this year’s Big Water Walk. 💧🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ This powerful initiative calls us to walk in solidarity with those who must travel long distances each day to access clean water – a basic human right many still live without. As we move through Lent, our participation in Project Compassion is a tangible expression of our faith in action – living out the Gospel through compassion, justice and generosity. Let’s answer the call together. #ProjectCompassion #CSPD #BigWaterWalk #FaithInAction #CaritasAustralia

During the event, they had the opportunity to engage with the Bishop and connect with student leaders from across the Diocese. Seventeen Years 10–12 students completed their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh qualifying adventurous journeys (20–22 February), hiking and paddling through the Hawkesbury region. From Jerusalem Bay to Brooklyn Dam, Pinta Cove and Parsley Bay, students navigated with compasses, carried full packs in hot conditions and built resilience on land and water. We’re incredibly proud of our inaugural Duke of Edinburgh group for completing their journeys in challenging summer conditions. Thank you to Out and About Adventures (Peter and Melina) and Santa Sophia staff Mrs Currall and Mr Awny for their support in making this an unforgettable experience. 🥾🛶☀️
