Staff Visit to the USA 2019

13 Nov 2019

Santa Sophia teachers travelled to the United States

During the September school holidays, eight Santa Sophia teachers travelled to the United States to visit schools in San Diego and San Fransisco.

They visited schools to learn more about assessment capable learners and project based learning. The trip was a wonderful learning experience and also affirmed that the pedagogy and initiatives at Santa Sophia are world-class! Below a few of our teachers share about their experiences:

The USA immersion trip to different high schools was excellent as it allowed us to see similarities and differences in our pedagogy as well as affirmed us in what we are already implementing in our school context (e.g. rigorous PBL and assessment capable learners).

It was great to see students taking ownership of their learning by co-constructing project ideas, driving questions, learning intentions, success criteria and rubrics with the teachers, allowing students to learn these skills under the teacher's guidance as well as apply these skills independently. This experience has given us the courage to try new things as well as the comfort of knowing that there are educators on the other side of the world experiencing similar joys and challenges that teaching brings.'

Santa Sophia teachers travelled to the United States

Mr Knight:

'The opportunity to visit and learn from PBL schools gave me many valuable ideas and processes that I will be able to apply and incorporate into our Mathematics classes at Santa Sophia.

I witnessed many students flourishing in environments where they could learn in rotational workshops and masterclasses of only a small group of students. I saw students who were very familiar and aware of their responsibilities when given set roles in a PBL project. I saw the value of students self-assessing and reflecting on exemplars of student work. I saw the strength of a visible learning environment where students were highly familiar with established whole-school approaches to problem-solving and other numeracy strategies and i really valued the professional conversations and discussions that I was afforded with educational leaders from the United States.'

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ”ฌ Why are opposable thumbs so important? Our Year 5 students put this question to the test as part of their study of structural adaptations! Through a hands-on investigation, they challenged themselves to stack counters, write their names and button a shirt without using their thumbs. The activity highlighted just how important our opposable thumbs are for dexterity, precision and everyday tasks. #Year5Lesson #ScienceLesson #ScienceExeriments Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Our Kindy students aged overnight as they celebrated 100 Days of Kindy! ๐ŸŽ‰ To mark 100 days of learning, growing and getting smarter, our little learners arrived dressed as their 100 year old selves and they absolutely nailed it! From grey wigs and glasses to walking sticks and cardigans, their creativity (and their parents' efforts!) made the day extra special. A huge shout-out to our amazing parents for putting together these incredible costumes! What a fantastic job! ๐Ÿ‘ And an equally big thank you to our wonderful Kindy teachers for putting together such a beautiful celebration. All the planning, preparation and behind the scenes effort made the day truly unforgettable. Stay tuned... there are plenty more photos to come! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’™ #100DaysOfKindy #Kindergarten2026 #SchoolofCuriosity

A beautiful day in the city for our Year 11 Photography students! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐ŸŒฟ As part of their Alternative Photography unit, students visited the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney to gather inspiration and photographic source material for their exploration of cyanotypes, anthotypes and botanical subject matter. From observing natural forms to documenting textures, patterns and light, the excursion provided the perfect opportunity to connect theory with practice in one of Sydney's most inspiring outdoor classrooms. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ #Photography #Art #RoyalBotanicalGarden #Sydney

As part of the visit from Koka High School, Miss Macpherson and Mr Djakovic brought together our Year 11 Society and Culture class and their Japanese peers for a meaningful intercultural exchange. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต As part of their current unit on Intercultural Communication, our students presented a PowerPoint showcasing Australian culture, our education system and life at Santa Sophia Catholic College. They then took part in small-group discussions, sharing stories, asking questions and learning about each other's cultures before enjoying a tour of the College together. This enriching experience allowed our Year 11 students to build new connections, broaden their perspectives and put their learning into practice. We thank the students and staff of Koka High School for visiting and making the experience so memorable. @koka_high.official #InternationalExchange #SocietyandCulture

Something BIG is coming to Santa Sophia Catholic College... and it's going to ROCK! ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽธ This year's CBCA Book Week theme is Symphony of Stories, and we're turning up the volume with our very own School of Rock celebration! We're incredibly excited to welcome ARIA Award-winning singer-songwriter Tania Doko to Santa Sophia on Thursday 20 August. Tania is one half of the iconic Australian duo Bachelor Girl, whose hits Buses and Trains and Permission to Shine became Australian classics. More recently, Tania teamed up with Guy Sebastian for a beautiful new version of Permission to Shineโ€”and we're thrilled to also share a special video message from Guy with our students as part of our celebration. #BookWeek2026 #BookWeek #SymphonyofStories #SchoolofRock #DressUp #SantaSophiaCatholicCollege #ChildrensBookCouncilofAustralia

Our Year 10 Marine students are making a real difference for one of Sydney's most iconic marine species โ€“ the endangered White's Seahorse! Through the Seahorse Saviour program, students have become marine conservationists, learning about habitat loss, marine ecosystems, and the science behind protecting local wildlife. Their journey culminated in deploying seahorse hotels into Sydney Harbour, helping to restore vital habitat and support the recovery of White's Seahorse populations. This incredible hands-on experience allowed students to work alongside marine scientists, apply their classroom learning in the field, and contribute to genuine conservation efforts. We are so proud of our students for demonstrating curiosity, teamwork, and environmental stewardship while helping to protect our amazing marine environmentโ€”one seahorse at a time! #SeahorseSaviourProgram #MarineandAquaculture #ProjectHumble2026
