Welcome back everyone and welcome to the 2020 school year!
We would especially like to welcome all of the new students and families to our Santa Sophia school community. Although only three weeks have passed, it has truly been a fantastic and busy start to the year!
The Year 1 children have been setting such a wonderful example to our new students… the kindergarten children. They have thoroughly enjoyed being the ‘big kids’ of the school and have helped kindergarten transition smoothly into the learning space.
One of the highlights this term was when Year 1 students strutted through the school gates with beaming smiles showing off their brand new summer school uniform. The children look absolutely beautiful and handsome and were the centre of attention. The children have been wearing their new school uniform with a sense of pride and are proud representing our school college.
In the past few weeks of learning, the students have engaged and immersed themselves in learning how they can let their light shine and be a living example of Jesus' love towards others. The children have also been listening to a variety of imaginative texts during shared reading and have particularly enjoyed the book ‘The Magic Hat.’ During one of our writing sessions centred on The Magic Hat, the students continued the sentence starter, if the magic hat landed on my head, I would turn into a….
The children were so creative and they wanted to turn into many interesting animals such as a dog, cat, shark, turtle and even a dinosaur!
The topic we have been exploring during investigations is one that students have truly been fascinated by. Year 1 has been exploring observable changes in the sky particularly looking at the concepts of day and night. The children have immersed themselves in a range of activities during investigation time where students have been learning about the movement of the sun, phases of the moon, constellations, shadows and types of clouds. The students’ engagement has been wonderful and the students have been excited to share many interesting facts during sharing time.
Something that we are all looking forward to in a few weeks is our first Year 1 excursion to Sydney Observatory.
During Mathematics, the children have become time detectives and have begun learning to tell time to the half hour and use a calendar to identify the days and dates of each month. So parents, next time you lose track of what day and date it is, you know exactly who to ask!
We look forward to the children sharing their learning with you and continuing the amazing learning for the rest of the term!
