In iSTEM*, students from Stage 5 have been learning about how simple machines such as levers, inclined planes, wheels, pulleys and screws can reduce the amount of effort required to complete a task.
iSTEM is a student centred subject for students in Years 9 and 10 that delivers Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in an innovative and integrated way. Incorporating mechatronics, artificial intelligence, PBL, cybersecurity, engineering, 3D CAD/CAM, aerospace, and motion modules, iSTEM presents maths and sciences to students in ways that challenge not only their understanding of these key subjects but also their ability to manage projects and work in teams.
In this activity, students used Engino Mechanics kits to construct models of common technologies that utilise simple machines.

Last week our sister school, Koka, has arrived and received a warm welcome from families across the college community. They spent an exciting weekend taking in the sights and embracing the Aussie lifestyle with their host families. As the visit came to an end, our wonderful guests celebrated in true Aussie style—sampling classic local snacks and sharing a heartfelt presentation about their school with their new Aussie buddies 🇯🇵🤝🇦🇺 . Careers Breakfast: Engineering & IT 🔧💻 15 of our students took part in an engaging Careers Breakfast focused on Engineering and Information Technology. Guest speakers James Carter (Nano Vacuum) and Rolf Samonte (Metro Trains Sydney) shared real-world insights into their fields—ranging from quantum computing and space simulations to cyber security in driverless trains. They highlighted the importance of studying Maths, Physics and STEM subjects, and encouraged students to gain industry experience while still at school. A big thank you to James and Rolf—also proud SSCC parents—for inspiring our students and generously sharing their time and expertise!

BEAT: Breathe Easy All Together 🫁 This peer leadership program empowers students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions about e-cigarette use and advocate for respiratory health. At the end of last term, 27 of our dedicated Year 10 students completed an hour of online training and generously gave up their pupil-free day to take part in a full day of face-to-face training. They’ll now use their skills and resources to lead two sessions with our Year 7 cohort during wellbeing time in Week 2 and Week 4.
