Student-led lessons in Youth and Culture PIP

14 Oct 2020

Year 7 Youth and Culture Personal Interest Project Students led their peers in their own student led lessons.

Students had to prepare an engaging lessons based on a Saint and quote from that Saint exploring the Saint's life and virtues

Lessons were structured - beginning with prayer, an icebreaker, a lesson on the chosen Saint, and a team-building activity relating to virtues, getting their own experience of lesson planning and teaching a class.

πŸ“– "A Biblical Walk Through the Mass" facilitated by Father Walter πŸ—“ Every Thursday πŸ•– 7:00 pm light supper | 7:30 pm session start πŸ“ Santa Sophia College All are warmly invited to join this beautiful series exploring the meaning and depth of the Mass. Here are brief reflections from two participants from last week’s session: Pauline: β€œThe session stirred something deep within me. I was reminded that the Eucharist is not merely a ritual act β€” it is sacrifice, communion, and covenant. In receiving Him, we are drawn into Christ and become living tabernacles, carrying Our Blessed Lord within us. This changes everything.” Anonymous participant: β€œIt was a blessing to better understand what happens when we receive the Eucharist. Realising that we become a temple housing the holy presence of God has changed how I will approach the Mass and receive Communion.” Everyone is welcome β€” whether for one session or the remaining weeks. #BibleStudy #Lent2026

This week, Year 3 Fuchsia and White, celebrated Santa Sophia’s first Family Mass with Father Carlos. This Mass allowed our College to fully bring to life the fact that parents are the first educators of their children in faith and by their presence, showed the importance of faith in action by attending and participating in Mass. πŸ™πŸ» Parents and students participated in the Mass either by reading the First Reading and Responsorial Psalm and bringing forward the Offertory gifts of bread and wine. The students showed great reverence in the Mass. This experience helps them as they move forward to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist later in the year. ❀✨ #FamilyMass Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

The School of Curiosity launched their 2026 peer-support program this week by celebrating Cuddle Buddy Day! πŸ§ΈπŸ’› The children engaged in Literacy and Numeracy tasks that had a cuddle toy theme. They then met their Buddies from a different grade and participated in a variety of fun activities to get to know one another. Lastly, K-4 opened their doors and welcomed parents into their classrooms. The children were so excited to share their learning with their parents. πŸ“š #Cuddlebuddy #SchoolofCuriosity

Year 8 Incursion: Japanese Undokai πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ Last Thursday and Friday, our Year 8 students threw themselves into the energy and excitement of a traditional Japanese Undokai (sports festival)! From Tug’o’War and Eye of the Storm to Bird’s Nest and a thrilling Obstacle Course, every activity was filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and house spirit. We were delighted to welcome our special guests from AYJC β€” Honda Sensei, Tomo-san and Aki-san β€” who led the sessions in both English and Japanese. It was wonderful to hear students greeting one another in Japanese and embracing the cultural experience. The incursion encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, try something new and support one another along the way. We are so proud of the positive attitudes, strong participation and teamwork shown by our entire Year 8 cohort! #japaneseincursion

Last night our School of Connect hosted their 2026 Welcome Evening and BBQ. It was great to see so many families attend this event, with our middle school students proudly leading the way showcasing their school and introducing their parents to their teachers. In the School of Connect, connection is key and we are so fortunate have so many dedicated staff who stayed back to meet our wonderful families. #SchoolofConnect

Today our whole college community came together to mark Ash Wednesday. Our School of Curiosity, led beautifully by Year 3, opened the day in prayer and song, followed by gatherings with the School of Connect and School of Challenge. It was a reverent and reflective occasion, inviting us to turn inward and consider how we can return to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during this Lenten season. As we received the ashes, we were reminded of the call to β€œRepent and believe in the Gospel” β€” a powerful invitation to renewal, faith, and love. #AshWednesday #Lent Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese

Today we celebrated Shrove Tuesday as a Santa Sophia community πŸ₯žβœ¨ Shrove Tuesday is a special day in the Liturgical calendar, marking the day before Lent begins β€” a time of reflection, prayer and preparation for Easter. There were lots of smiling faces (and long lines!) as students lined up for pancakes. A wonderful way to come together before the season of Lent begins. πŸ’œ Thank you to our Social Justice team and student helpers for doing fantastic job serving their peers. #Lent #ShroveTuesday Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese
