Today, Santa Sophia students celebrated World Engineering Day from RAAF Base Richmond.
Santa Sophia and other CEDP students, teachers and professionals gained exposure of the complex engineering capabilities and support functions in the Australian Defence Force.
Engineers in the Royal Australian Air Force presented to an audience of students about how they contribute to Australian Defence Force capabilities and what their role represents. The live display of RAAF Engineering included a demonstration of an Air Load Drop to showcase how engineering contributes to safe Air Cargo Delivery.
One of our teachers, Mr Chris Hersey, who was in the Airforce as an Armament Engineer for over 27 years, also spoke to the audience about STEM in schools. The students who attended were grateful for the tremendous opportunity!

🌏✨ This term, our School of Connect students had the privilege of hearing from the House of Welcome, an organisation that supports refugees and people seeking asylum right here in our local community. They shared stories of resilience and highlighted the vital work they do — from providing accommodation and employment support to running a food bank that ensures families have access to essential groceries. 🥖🥫🍎 In response, our students have been bringing in food donations over the past week to help stock the House of Welcome’s food bank. This year, our College launched a teacher-led initiative to collect Dignity Bags in support of the amazing work of Share the Dignity! 💖 With the generosity of our wonderful teachers and inspiring Year 11 & 12 students, we’ve been able to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. 👜 These Dignity Bags will go directly to women and their children escaping domestic violence, as well as to those experiencing homelessness and hardship. Each bag is filled with essentials 🧴🧼🪥 and, more importantly, love and hope —reminding people that they are cared for and not forgotten. Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative, especially our Social Justice students for all their efforts in promoting and collecting these goods! This week, our Year 9 Child Studies students welcomed two special visitors – a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old. 🎉 As part of their assessment, students were tasked with designing a party for a 5-year-old. Our 5-year-old visitor took on the role of judge, while also joining in the party games, making the experience fun and authentic. Students had to ensure their party plans met key criteria, including: ✅ Nutritious and inclusive food options ✅ A clear, fun theme ✅ Creative and visually appealing decorations ✅ Variety and creativity in activities ✅ Inclusion of all required details Not only did students present their work to teachers and peers, but also to an authentic audience, gaining immediate feedback from the very age group they were designing for. At the end of the lesson, students also had the chance to implement some of their previous learnings by keeping our guests entertained. From egg and spoon races to parachute games, and even play with dolls, the Year 9s showed initiative, care, and creativity. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to bring their learning to life, and our junior judge had a wonderful time celebrating alongside Year 9.
