Write a Book In a Day

21 Sep 2020

WriteABookInADay

On Wednesday 16 September, a team of 8 students had 8 hours to write and illustrate a book to enter into the Write a Book in a Day Competition run by The Kids’ Cancer Project.

What a huge ask but the students proved to be up to the challenge.

The day began with the team showing initiative and leading the collaboration process whereby each team member contributed to the ideas generation for the plot, setting and character development. Watching the team work together was a really beautiful reminder that we all bring something different to the table and that when we use our unique gifts and strengths we achieve more together than we can on our own.

Listening to the team share their writing and illustrations had me blown away and in awe of their eloquent writing style at such a young age.  Even more impressive than their writing abilities was witnessing their encouragement of each other, giving authentic praise and thoughtful feedback.

Congratulations Darcy, Patrick, Jessica, Cassandra, Sairam, Mitchell, Audrey and Makiah on Writing a Book in a Day!

🎭✨ A little sneak peek from today's Matinee Performance of Matilda Jr.! Our K–4 students thoroughly enjoyed the show and had the opportunity to take part in a special Q&A session with the cast afterwards. From "How do you remember all your lines?" and "How long did rehearsals take?" to "Do you get nervous on stage?" and "Are you happy when you're performing?" β€” there were plenty of thoughtful and curious questions from our youngest audience members. Who knows? We may have some future performers sitting in the audience! 🌟 Tonight, our cast can't wait to perform for the wider community. Doors open at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start, so arrive early to secure the best seats available. 🎟️ While all performances initially sold out, due to overwhelming demand we've released an additional 30 seats per night. Don't miss your chance to see this incredible production β€” tickets are still available, but be quick! We can't wait to see you there! πŸ“šπŸ«πŸŽΆ #MatildaJr #SantaSophiaCatholicCollege #PerformingArts #StudentTalent #ShowWeek

β„οΈπŸ’™ On Friday 12 June, almost 80 Santa Sophia students participated in our annual Vinnies Winter Sleepout β€” our largest Sleepout yet. The experience challenged students to step outside their comfort zones and gain a deeper understanding of homelessness and disadvantage in our community. Supplied with only cardboard, a simple meal of soup and bread, and the support of one another, students spent the night in solidarity with those experiencing homelessness. Throughout the evening, students reflected on Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching, learned about the realities of homelessness in Australia, and considered how they can make a difference through service and compassion. We are incredibly proud to share that, thanks to the generosity of our school community, over $12,500 has been raised so far to support the important work of Vinnies Homeless Services and programs. A heartfelt thank you to our students, families, and staff for their support, and especially to the staff members who volunteered their time to help make the event possible. πŸ’™ Donations are still open for anyone who would like to contribute via the Santa Sophia Winter Appeal Fundraising Page https://my.fundraise.vinniesnsw.org.au/vinnies-school-sleepouts/santa-sophia-catholic-college-winter-appeal?tab=leaderboard&utm_source=chatgpt.com #VinniesWinterSleepout #WinterAppeal #SocialJustice #FaithInAction #MakingADifference

This term, our Fiji Immersion students, together with the Social Justice Crew, led a successful fundraising initiative to support their upcoming Immersion Trip to Fiji. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our school community, we sold more Krispy Kreme boxes exceeding last year's fundraising efforts. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our students, families, and staff. A special thank you to everyone who contributed and to the students who dedicated their time and energy to making the fundraiser such a success. Everyone definitely enjoyed the donuts! πŸ₯― We look forward to following the students' journey and hearing about their experiences when they travel to Fiji during the July holidays. βœˆοΈπŸ‡«πŸ‡― #FijiImmersion #KrispyKreme #Fundraiser

Our Year 11 Biology students recently visited Sydney Zoo as part of their Depth Study investigation. πŸ¦πŸ¦’πŸ”¬ The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to observe a diverse range of animal species firsthand while exploring key biological concepts such as adaptations, biodiversity, and ecosystem diversity. Through real-world observation and inquiry, students were able to deepen their understanding of how organisms interact with and adapt to their environments. A fantastic day of learning beyond the classroom! 🌿🐾 #Year11Biology #SydneyZoo #LearningBeyondTheClassroom

Kindergarten went on their first excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm. The children had a fabulous time learning about farm animals. πŸ„πŸ–πŸ‘ They particularly enjoyed learning about the different things we get from plants and animals, milking a cow, patting baby animals and going for a ride on the tractor across the paddock. πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸŒΎπŸšœ #Kindergarten2026 #KindyExcursion #FarmAnimals

In this episode of the Just Cause Podcast, we're joined by Year 11 students Aadi and Carlos, who take us behind the scenes of the social justice initiatives taking place at Santa Sophia Catholic College. Together, they explore what social justice means, why it matters, and how our school community is putting faith into action through service, advocacy, and awareness. They also discuss the many ways students can get involved and make a positive difference. Aadi and Carlos share their own personal experiences and perspectives, reflecting on why social justice is important to them and how it connects to their faith, values, and commitment to serving others. Their insights make for a thoughtful and engaging conversation that inspires us all to consider how we can contribute to a more just and compassionate world. πŸŽ™οΈ Enjoying the podcast? πŸ™ Our weekly Rosary continues to grow! Students from Years 5–12 are invited each Thursday at recess to come together in prayer and reflection. Through the Rosary, students contemplate the mysteries of Jesus' life through the eyes of Mary, trusting in her loving intercession and deepening their faith. Now in its fifth week, it has been wonderful to see such a strong turnout from students across the College. We are grateful for the opportunity to gather as a faith community and spend time in prayer together. All students are welcome to join us each Thursday at recess. #FIAT #RosaryGroup #WeeklyRosary #FaithinAction
